We live in a stress fueled world. We all have deadlines, responsibilities and numerous directions we are pulled in constantly.

Stress is listed as a precipitating factor for so many chronic disease conditions so it makes sense that minimising those feelings and their impacts on our bodies should be a priority. Meditation, mindfullness, yoga, gentle exercise, having a chat, practicing gratitude are all great coping tools. But did you know that the active constituents of certain foods can also have a calming effect on your body?

Eating organic is expensive particularly if you have a young family, or it can be. But there are some great ways to cut costs.

🌸 NFP Local Organic Food Co-ops

My personal favourite. I order a $37 box on Fridays and on Monday afternoons I pop along and collect my large seasonal box of fruit and veges. It is always jam packed with produce and as the co-op accesses wholesale rates it's cheaper than buying conventional food from the super market ! I quite like having a mix of things each week and make my recipes from there (as with last week I have a freezer stocked full of protein options) which means i access lower costs from eating seasonally and get a broad range of fruits and veges rather than sticking to my faves.

🌸Farmers Markets

Another good option for more budget friendly pricing. Scattered throughout Australia these are a great way to get local fresh quality produce direct from the farmer (supporting small business for the win!)

Chickpea-Mushroom Soup with Tahini

The classic Middle Eastern team of chickpeas and tahini (sesame paste) is combined in a tasty, offbeat soup. 


  • 1 tablespoon ghee

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 3 to 4 cloves garlic, minced

  • 4 cups stock

  • 2 cups sliced mushroms

  • 1 cup finely shredded white cabbage

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 2 teaspoons salt-free seasoning

  • 3½ cups cooked canned chickpeas, drained and rinsed

  • ¼ cup tahini (unhulled)

  • ¼ to ½ cup finely chopped fresh parsley, to taste

  • 3 to 4 shallots, green parts only, thinly sliced

  • 2 to 3 tablespoons minced fresh dill, or more, to taste

  • Juice of ½ to 1 lemon, to taste

  • Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
