How to Eat Well on a Budget

Eating organic is expensive particularly if you have a young family, or it can be. But there are some great ways to cut costs.

 

🌸 NFP Local Organic Food Co-ops

My personal favourite. I order a $37 box on Fridays and on Monday afternoons I pop along and collect my large seasonal box of fruit and veges. It is always jam packed with produce and as the co-op accesses wholesale rates it's cheaper than buying conventional food from the super market ! I quite like having a mix of things each week and make my recipes from there (as with last week I have a freezer stocked full of protein options) which means i access lower costs from eating seasonally and get a broad range of fruits and veges rather than sticking to my faves.

 

🌸Farmers Markets

Another good option for more budget friendly pricing. Scattered throughout Australia these are a great way to get local fresh quality produce direct from the farmer (supporting small business for the win!)

 

In Cairns / FNQ - We have the convenient Rustys markets running in the city friday, saturday and sunday every week with great prices. 

 

In Sydney - Frenchs Forest on a Sunday, Bondi and Marickville on Saturdays and EQ on Wednesdays are the best from my perspective (although let me know if I should add to the list)

 

🌸 Buy direct from the farmer

Buying direct from the farmer not only supports small local business and ensures our hardworking farmers are being fairly paid for their work and their produce, but its also a great money saver.

 

Beef - John Bull Farming from the Tablelands are my go to guys for beef. They practice organic farming, low stress stock management and are all round nice people. AND they make GAPS sausages all for a wholesale price only slightly higher than conventional (full of hormones, low quality, fed grains, low animal welfare standards). They are available at Rustys markets or at the farm store.

 

Dairy - Mungalli Dairy are a well prices organic biodynamic dairy up here in Far North Queensland. They have a great range of milk, yoghurt, kefir and cheese and.... Their Lactoce free greek yoghurt is GAPS friendly due to the long ferment, as is their kefir. They are available in Coles and Woolies in the Cairns region, at Rustys Markets and also have a little store on Alexander Street in Manoora which gives you a discount off the RRP saving those much needed pennies.

 

🌸 Include more seasonal veges in your meals

Veges in season as significantly cheaper than meat and out of season veges. Use less meat and more veges in your casseroles, stews, soups, roasts and salads. It will save money while raising your nutrient intake.

 

🌸 Dirty Dozen and Clean 15

 

The dirty dozen and the clean 15 refer to the fruits and vegetables that are the most and least contaminated by pesticide use, according to the Environmental Working Group.

 

To spread the budget a little further use this list to buy both conventional and organic produce.

 

The Dirty Dozen (in order of contamination)

- Apples

- Celery

- Sweet bell peppers

- Peaches

- Strawberries

- Nectarines

- Grapes

- Spinach

- Lettuce

- Cucumbers

- Blueberries

- Potatoes

 

The Clean 15 (in order of least contamination)

- Onions

- Sweet Corn

- Pineapples

- Avocado

- Cabbage

- Sweet peas

- Asparagus

- Mangoes

- Eggplant

- Kiwi

- Cantaloupe

- Sweet potatoes

- Grapefruit

- Watermelon

- Mushrooms.
